Saint Augustine lived in the 4th century. He was raised by his mother, Saint Monica, in Carthage, Africa. He lived a prodigal life of sin, and at the ceaseless prayers of his mother, he came to repentance and true faith in Christ. Augustine's autobiography of repentance is found in his book Confessions.

He traveled to Italy and studied under Saint Ambrose, was baptized, and was tonsured a monk. He was ordained a priest in 391 and became bishop of Hippo a few years later. As bishop, he combatted many heresies and wrote prolifically, using language that the common people could understand and learn from.

Saint Augustine reposed in peace in the year 430. His feast is celebrated on August 28 (the date of his death) in the West and on June 15 in the Orthodox Church. He is oftentimes given the additional honorific title of "Blessed."
