Saint Columba was a 6th century Irish missionary who evangelized in Scotland. One of the earliest missionaries to the Scottish tribes, he founded several monasteries and churches. Also a renowned writer, he composed hymns and transcribed hundreds of books. His efforts to bring peace to the Pictish tribes gained him great honor among their people. He is also remembered as a wonderworker who performed miracles.
He reposed on June 9, 597, and was buried at the Abbey of Iona. His feast is celebrated on June 9 by Eastern and Western Christians alike.
